Collingwood Street Area - Road Closure to Allow Works to Be Carried Out on or Near the Highway

What is happening?

CITY OF NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE
(COLLINGWOOD STREET AREA)
TEMPORARY TRAFFIC REGULATION
ORDER 2023
1. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council
of the City of Newcastle upon Tyne intend,
not less than seven days from the date of this
Notice, to make an Order under Section 14
of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984,
the effect of which will be to -
(i) prohibit all traffic (vehicles, pedestrians
and other traffic) from proceeding on-
(a) Bigg Market - for its entire length,
(b) Groat Market - for its entire length,
(c) Pudding Chare - for its entire length,
(d) High Bridge - for its entire length,
(e) Cloth Market - for its entire length,
(f) Mosley Street - for its entire length,
(g) St Nicholas Square - for its entire length,
(h) Collingwood Street - for its entire length, and
(i) St Nicholas Street - from Collingwood
Street southwards for 55 metres
(ii) prohibit all vehicles from proceeding
in an eastwards direction on Side, and
(iii) introduce a one-way westwards
restriction on Side between
Dean Street and St Nicholas Street.
2. For the duration of the Order, the following
will be suspended -
(i) the bus lane on Westgate Road (eastbound)
between Grainger Street and Neville Street,
(ii) the pedestrian zone on Grey Street
between its junctions with Market Street
and Shakespeare Street,
(iii) the pedestrian zone on Side between its
junctions with St Nicholas Street and
Dean Street,
(iv) the prohibition of entry of motor vehicles
restriction from Dean Street into Side, and
(v) the one-way eastwards restriction on
Side between its junctions with
St Nicholas Street and Dean Street.
3. Appropriate traffic management will be in
place during the closures.
4. The Order is required to allow works to be
carried out on or near the highway.
5. Exemptions will be provided for vehicles
and persons engaged in the works and
where possible, for police, fire brigade and
ambulance vehicles and personnel on
emergency call.
6. The Order will come into operation on
8 January 2024 and will continue, as and
when the relevant traffic signs are displayed,
for 6 weeks or until the proposed works are
completed, whichever is the earlier.
The works will be undertaken overnight
between the hours of 7pm and 7am.
