M27, M271, M275 AND A3(M) Motorways & A3 A27 Trunk Roads, Portsmouth & Southampton - Temporary Traffic Restriction
What is happening?
NATIONAL HIGHWAYS
M27, M271, M275 AND A3(M) MOTORWAYS & A3 AND A27 TRUNK ROADS (PORTSMOUTH AND SOUTHAMPTON) TEMPORARY TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS
Notice is hereby given that National Highways had made an Order on the
M27, M271, M275 and A3(M) Motorways and the A3 and A27 Trunk Roads in the Counties of Hampshire and Surrey, and the Unitary Authorities of the City of Southampton and the City of Portsmouth, under Sections 14(1)(a), 14(1)(c) and 14(7) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 because works are proposed to be executed on, or in the vicinity of, the road. The effect of the Order is to:-
1. authorise the phased overnight closure of –
(a) both carriageways of the M27 Motorway between Junction 1 (A31) and Junction 12 (A3/A27);
(b) both carriageways of the M271 Motorway from the A3057 Roundabout to Redbridge Roundabout (A33/A35) ;
(c) both carriageways of the M275 Motorway between Hilsea Interchange and Junction 2 (A3);
(d) both carriageways of the A3(M) between Junction 1 (A3) and Junction 5 (A27/A2030) ;
(e) all slip and link roads leading to and from the lengths of carriageway described in 1. (a) to (d) above;
(f) the hard shoulder adjacent to the lengths of carriageway and slip and link roads described in 1. (a) to (e) above; and
(g) any emergency refuge area adjacent to the lengths of carriageway described in 1. (a) above.
2. authorise the phased overnight hard shoulder running adjacent to the lengths of carriageway and the slip and link roads described in 1. (a) to (e) above.
3. permit HGVs in the outside lane of the lengths of carriageway described in 1. (a) to (c) above, during inside-lane closures.
4. authorise the phased overnight closure of –
(a) both carriageways of the A27 between Portsbridge Roundabout (M27 Junction 12) and Pevensey Roundabout;
(b) both carriageways of the A3 between Ockham Interchange (B2039/ B2215) and a point 500 metres north-west of the northern entry/exit of Hindhead Tunnel;
(c) both carriageways of the A3 between the centreline of Hazel Grove Interchange (A333) and Horndean Interchange (A3(M) Junction 1);
(d) any slip and link road leading to or from the lengths of carriageway described in 4. (a), (b) and (c) above;
(e) any side road at junction with the lengths of carriageway described in 4. (a), (b) and (c) above; and
(f) any lay-by or bus stop adjacent to the lengths of carriageway described in in 4. (a), (b) and (c) above.
These measures are in the interests of road safety while contractors undertake maintenance and renewal work of a cyclical nature and M27, M271, M275, A3(M), A3 and A27 project works.
The duration of each closure will vary depending on the nature of the maintenance work being undertaken on each occasion. The programme of works will start on or after 2nd January 2024. The overnight closures will be in operation between 21:00 and 06:00 (maximum period).
Planned maintenance work will be scheduled to avoid disruption during known peak periods, although essential maintenance may be necessary during these periods to prevent the need for emergency works. Please see National Highways website for specific details on any upcoming closures. The Order will come into force on 2nd January 2024 and remain in force until 24th December 2024.
Traffic affected by the closures will be diverted via other junctions of the M27, M271, M275, A3(M), A3 and the A27 or by using the M3, A31, A32, A33, A35, A36, A246, A247, A25, A272, A322, A325, A334, A335, A336, A2030, A3024, A3057, B2039, B2070, B2148, B2149, B2150, B2171, B2177, B2215, B3000, B3002, B3004, B3006, B382, Bridge Road, Chilbrook Road, Downside Bridge Road, Downside Road, Forest Road, Horsley Road, and Old Lane.
The diversion in operation will vary according to the closure in force, and the diversion roads listed above are the agreed routes, but these may change depending on local conditions.
The temporary closures, hard shoulder and HGV outside lane running and diversion routes will be clearly indicated by traffic signs when they are in operation during the works period.
