Durham, Multiple Roads, Temporary Closures Due To Resurfacing Works

What is happening?

The County Council of Durham (A177 South Road & Stockton Road and C98 Church Street Head & Quarryheads Lane, Durham City) (Temporary Road Closure) Order 2023

The Council proposes to make an Order under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended, Section 14(1) to prohibit all vehicular traffic from proceeding on the 'New Inn' crossroad junction including the following lengths of road in Durham to enable carriageway resurfacing works to be undertaken: a. A177 South Road - a 150 metre length extending south westwards from the junction b. A177 Stockton Road - a 55 metre length extending eastwards from the junction c. C98 Church Street Head - a 140 metre length extending north eastwards from the junction to the junction with Boyd Street d. C98 Quarryheads Lane - a 50 metre length extending westwards from the junction. An alternative route will be available to vehicular traffic from the southwestern side of the closure, from A177 south westerly to the 'Cock O' The North' Roundabout, then northerly on A167 to A690 Nevilles Cross, then easterly on A690 to A181 Gilesgate Roundabout, then continuing easterly and then south easterly on A181 through Sherburn Hospital, westerly on B1198 to Shincliffe to the junction with A177 to the southeastern side of the closure, and vice versa. Local access diversions will be available at the southwestern side of the closure via A177 South Road, Elvet Hill Road and Potters Bank to Quarryheads Lane, and also at the north eastern side of the closure via A177 Stockton Road, Hallgarth Street and Church Street. The maximum duration of the Order is 18 months. The proposed works are to commence between 8pm and midnight on 22/10/23 and then between 7pm and 6am for the remainder of the 6 nights work (no closures on Friday and Saturday nights). On occasions, alternative dates for closure may be necessary and these will be signed on site accordingly.
