THE A47 TRUNK ROAD (BRUNDALL TO ACLE, NORFOLK)
(TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC AND PEDESTRIANS)
ORDER 202_
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited(a) intends to make an Order on the A47 Trunk Road in the County of Norfolk to enable major works to upgrade the A47 to dual carriageway between Brundall and Acle and all associated works, including general routine maintenance to be carried out in safety.
The works are expected to last until September 2025, commencing on or after Monday 18 September 2023. The works would be carried out in phases using a combination of full carriageway and slip road closures, lay-by and footway closures, contraflow, no overtaking, gap closures, weight and width restrictions and lane closures. Temporary mandatory speed limits would be in force at times in the interest of safety.
The restrictions and prohibitions would be applied only to the extent that is necessary for particular works to be undertaken and would only apply during such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by traffic signs.
The effect of the Order on the A47 would be to -
1. impose a speed restriction for 24 hours daily, of 30 miles per hour, 40 miles per hour, 50 miles per hour, or 60 miles per hour between Cucumber Roundabout, Brundall and Acle Roundabout, Acle.
2. Close, (8pm-6am) the eastbound and westbound carriageways between Cucumber Roundabout, Brundall and Acle Roundabout, Acle, including all slip roads within that length.
A system of contraflow would be in operation at times (for 24 hours daily), on the -
• eastbound, and alternately westbound, carriageways from its junction with the eastern side of Cucumber Roundabout, Brundall for a distance of 2900 metres, and
• westbound, and alternately eastbound, carriageways from its junction with the western side of Acle Roundabout, Acle for a distance of 3500 metres.
Vehicles with an overall width exceeding 2.0 metres and an operating weight exceeding 7.5 tonnes would be prohibited from entering the lengths of carriageway described at 2 above.
Prohibited vehicles would be directed to follow the diversion route below.
During the works all gaps in the central reservation and lay-bys situated adjacent to the lengths of carriageway described at 2 above would remain closed for 24 hours daily.
Pedestrians would be prohibited from using the footway adjacent to the eastbound carriageway from a point -
• 91 metres west of Dell Corner to Main Road, and
• 54 metres west of B1140 South Walsham Road to the entry slip road at Norwich Road junction.
Pedestrians requiring access would be escorted.
Access to or from the A47 from various side roads adjacent to the lengths of carriageway described at 2 above would remain closed for 24 hours daily.
For closures between Cucumber Roundabout and Acle Roundabout, traffic would be diverted via the A146 and A143.
During gap closures traffic would be diverted to continue to either Cucumber Lane Roundabout or Acle Roundabout to join the opposite carriageway and continue.
Diversion routes for local closures would also be in place.
The temporary mandatory speed limits (which would not apply to emergency service or special forces vehicles) and closures (which would not apply to emergency service, traffic officer, winter maintenance or works vehicles) would be clearly indicated by traffic signs.
The Order would come into force on 18 September 2023 and may continue in force until the works detailed above have been completed.
