ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 - SECTION 14 THE A66 TRUNK ROAD (BROWSON BANK TO CUMBRIAN BORDER) (TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC)

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited intends to make an Order on the A66 Trunk Road, in the Counties of Cumbria, County Durham and North Yorkshire, to enable road marking and stud renewal works to be carried out in safety.

The works are expected to start on Saturday 12 August 2023 for 4 weeks, or until completed.

The effect of the Order will be to, at times during the works, for 24 hours a day, to impose a temporary 50mph, 40mph, 30mph and at times a 10mph speed restriction on the A66:

(i) eastbound carriageway from 2000 metres west of the Cumbrian Border to 240 metres east of the exit slip road at Bowes Interchange, a distance of 12000 metres;

(ii) westbound carriageway from 240 metres east of the entry slip road at Bowes Interchange to 2000 metres west of the Cumbrian Border, a distance of 12000 metres;

(iii) eastbound carriageway from 650 metres east of The Street Junction to a point 291 metres east of the centre line of the B6277 Cross Lanes junction, a distance of 4000 metres;

(iv) westbound carriageway 291 metres east of Cross Lanes Junction to 650 metres east of The Street Junction, a distance of 4000 metres;

(v) eastbound carriageway from 135 metres west of Rokeby Junction to 324 metres east of Browson Bank Junction, a distance of 6000 metres;

(vi) westbound carriageway from 324 metres east of Browson Bank Junction to 135 metres west of Rokeby Junction, a distance of 6000 metres;

(vii) from 580 metres east of Clint Lane Overbridge at Bowes Interchange to 650 metres east of The Street Junction, a distance of 2000 metres;

(viii) from 291 metres east of Cross Lanes Junction to 135 metres west of Rokeby Junction, a distance of 2600 metres; and

(ix) eastbound slip road at Bowes Interchange.

The 10mph limit will only apply when, for safety reasons, traffic has to be escorted through the works by a highway maintenance vehicle. It will also be necessary, for 24 hours a day, at times during the works, to close the laybys at the A66:

(x) eastbound and westbound carriageways from the Cumbrian Border to 324 metres east of Browson Bank Junction, a distance of 26000 metres.

It will be necessary, at times during the works, between 8pm and 6am to:

(xi) close the above-mentioned carriageways (i), (ii), (iii), (iv), (v) and (vi); during which times traffic will be diverted onto the opposite carriageway using a contraflow system;

(xii) close the A66 eastbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Bowes Interchange to Cross Lanes Junction, a distance of 5800 metres;

(xiii) close the gaps in the central reservation at the above mentioned (x);

(xiv) close the bus stop areas adjacent to the A66 eastbound carriageway approximately 120 metres west of Clint Lane overbridge. adjacent to the A66 eastbound carriageway approximately 161 metres east of Rokeby Junction and adjacent to the A66 westbound carriageway approximately 330 metres east of Rokeby Junction;

(xv) ban vehicles from entering or leaving the above mentioned (x); and

(xvi) close the crossing points from approximately 240 metres west of Newsam Grange to Rokeby Junction; during which non-motorised vehicles will be escorted through the works.

During the closures suitably signed alternative routes will be available at all times.

Traffic management will be in force 24 hours a day and traffic signs will indicate the extent of the restrictions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or special forces vehicles) and prohibitions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or vehicles being used in connection with the said works or for traffic officer or winter maintenance purposes). Access will be maintained at all times to premises and properties which are accessible from, and only from, the A66. The Order comes into force on 11 August 2023 and has a maximum duration of eighteen months. The project manager for this scheme is Sarah Southern.
