Kent County Council, acting in exercise of its powers under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, makes or intends to make the following Orders.
CANTERBURY AREA
Bekesbourne Lane, Canterbury CT3 4AD (PROHIBITION OF DRIVING) TEMPORARY ORDER FEBRUARY 2023
To allow vegetation works to be carried out, Kent County Council has made an Order prohibiting through traffic on part of Bekesbourne Lane, Canterbury, on or after 28th February 2023 for up to 1 day between the hours of 09:00 and 17:00, or until the works have been completed.
The road will be closed from outside Hoath Farm to outside Palmsted Wood, to the extent indicated by signs and barriers on site.
The alternative route for any through traffic is via Bekesbourne Lane, Bekesbourne Hill, Bekesbourne Lane, A257 High Street, The Hill, Canterbury Road, Littlebourne Road, Bekesbourne Lane and vice versa.
Cromwell Road, Whitstable (PROHIBITION OF DRIVING) TEMPORARY ORDER MARCH 2023
To allow sewer cleaning works to be carried out, Kent County Council intends to make an Order prohibiting through traffic on part of Cromwell Road, Whitstable, on or after 14th March 2023 for up to 1 night between the hours of 19:00 and 06:00, or until the works have been completed.
The road will be closed from outside number 170 to the junction with Stream Walk, to the extent indicated by signs and barriers on site.
The alternative route for southbound traffic is via Cromwell Road, Harbour Street, High Street, Oxford Street and Cromwell Road.
The alternative route for northbound traffic is via Cromwell Road, Oxford Street, High Street, Horsebridge Road, Sea Street, Harbour Street and Cromwell Road.
Eastbound Slip onto A299 Thanet Way, Whitstable (PROHIBITION OF DRIVING) TEMPORARY ORDER MARCH 2023
To allow electrical installation works to be carried out, Kent County Council intends to make an Order prohibiting through traffic on parts of Eastbound Slip onto the A299 Thanet Way, Whitstable. on or after 16th March 2023 for up to 21 days or until the works have been completed.
A temporary mandatory 30 mph speed restriction will be imposed on the A2290 Thanet Way, Whitstable from the existing 40mph signs (east of the traffic island) to Borstal Hill roundabout, to the extent indicated by signage on site.
The alternative routes for any through traffic are via A2990 Thanet Way, Thanet Way Roundabout or Borstal Hill and vice versa.
Ham Shades Lane, Whitstable CT5 2JJ (PROHIBITION OF DRIVING) TEMPORARY ORDER MARCH 2023
To allow vegetation works to be carried out, Kent County Council has made an Order prohibiting through traffic on part of Ham Shades Lane, Whitstable, on or after 1st March 2023 for up to 1 day between the hours of 09:00 and 15:00, or until the works have been completed.
The road will be closed in the general vicinity of rail bridge, to the extent indicated by signs and barriers on site.
The alternative route is via Ham Shades Lane, Church Street, Castle Road, Queens Road and vice versa.
Mill Road, Sturry CT2 0EA (PROHIBITION OF DRIVING) TEMPORARY ORDER MARCH 2023
To allow level crossing drainage works and other associated works to be carried out, Kent County Council intends to make an Order prohibiting through traffic on part of Mill Road, Sturry, on or after 5th March 2023 at 02:15, with estimated completion by 6th March 2023 at 04:15, or until the works have been completed.
The road will be closed in the general vicinity of the level crossing, to the extent indicated by signs and barriers on site.
The alternative route for any through traffic is via A291 Sturry Hill, Herne Bay Road, Calcott Hill, Canterbury Road, Herne Street, A299 Thanet Way, Westbound Slip Onto Wraik Hill Roundabout From A299, A290 Clapham Hill, Pean Hill, Honey Hill, Blean Common, Blean Hill, Whitstable Road, St Thomas Hill, London Road, A290 Rheims Way, St Peters Roundabout, A28 Wincheap Green, Pin Hill, Rhodaus Town, Riding Gate Roundabout, Upper Bridge Street, St George’s Roundabout, Lower Bridge Street, Broad Street, Military Road, Tourtel Road, Sturry Road, Mill Road and vice versa.
Northgate, Canterbury CT1 1BG (PROHIBITION OF DRIVING) TEMPORARY ORDER MARCH 2023
To allow reinstatement works to be carried out, Kent County Council has made an Order prohibiting through traffic on part of Northgate, Canterbury, on or after 1st March 2023 for up to 1 night between the hours of 20:00 and 06:00, or until the works have been completed.
The road will be closed in the general vicinity of number 60, to the extent indicated by signs and barriers on site.
The alternative route for eastbound traffic is via Northgate, Broad Street, A28 Military Road, Tourtel Road, Northgate, New Ruttington Lane, Union Place and Union Street.
The alternative route for westbound traffic is via Northgate, Kingsmead Road, St Stephen’s Road, The Causeway, Pound Lane, St Radigunds Street, Knotts Lane, King Street and Borough.
Faversham Road, Seasalter CT5 4BH (PROHIBITION OF DRIVING) TEMPORARY ORDER MARCH 2023
To allow carriageway resurfacing works to be carried out, Kent County Council intends to make an Order prohibiting through traffic on part of Faversham Road, Seasalter, on or after 14th March 2023 for up to 8 nights between the hours of 20:00 and 05:00, or until the works have been completed.
The road will be closed between the Sailing Club and Railway Line (near Oyster Pearl PH), to the extent indicated by signs and barriers on site.
The alternative route for any through traffic travelling westbound is via Faversham Road, Joy Lane, B2205 Borstal Hill, Clapham Hill, A299 Westbound on slip, A299 Thanet Way, Graveney off slip, Staple Street, Staple Street Road, Head Hill Road, Seasalter Road and Faversham Road.
The alternative route for traffic travelling eastbound is via Faversham Road, Seasalter Road, Head Hill Road, Whitstable Road, A299 Thanet Way on slip, A299 Thanet Way, A2990 Thanet Way slip way, A2990 (Old) Thanet Way, B2205 Borstal Hill, Joy Lane and Faversham Road.
St Nicholas Road, Thanington Without CT1 3UH (PROHIBITION OF DRIVING) TEMPORARY ORDER FEBRUARY 2023
To allow connection works to be carried out, Kent County Council has made an Order prohibiting through traffic travelling southbound on St Nicholas Road, Thanington Without, on or after 27th February 2023 for up to 12 days or until the works have been completed.
St Nicholas Road will be closed (southbound only) at the junction with A28 Thanington Road, to the extent indicated by signs and barriers on site.
The A28 Thanington Road will be minimised by 1 metre to accomodate a temporary pedestrian footway.
The alternative route is via A28 Thanington Road, Strangers Lane, Cockering Road and St Nicholas Road.
St Dunstans Street, Canterbury CT2 8DA (PROHIBITION OF DRIVING) TEMPORARY ORDER MARCH 2023
To allow level crossing maintenance works and other associated works to be carried out, Kent County Council intends to make an Order prohibiting through traffic on part of St Dunstans Street, Canterbury, on or after 4th March 2023 for up to 2 nights between the hours of 23:00 and 06:00, or until the works have been completed.
The road will be closed in the general vicinity of the level crossing, to the extent indicated by signs and barriers on site.
The alternative route for any through traffic is via St Dunstans Street, St Peter’s Place, St Peters Roundabout, A2050 Rheims Way, London Road Roundabout, London Road, St Dunstans Street and vice versa.
The alternative route for traffic unable to negotiate Westgate Towers is via North Lane, St Stephen’s Road, Kingsmead Road, A28 Tourtel Road, Military Road, Broad Street, Lower Bridge Street, Upper Bridge Street, Rhodaus Town, Pin Hill and A2050 Rheims Way.
Stodmarsh Road, Canterbury CT2 0DR (PROHIBITION OF DRIVING) TEMPORARY ORDER MARCH 2023
To allow water main connection works to be carried out, Kent County Council intends to make an Order prohibiting through traffic on part of Stodmarsh Road, Canterbury, on or after 6th March 2023 for up to 5 days or until the works have been completed.
The road will be closed in the general vicinity of Redwall, to the extent indicated by signs and barriers on site.
The alternative route for any through traffic under 6’ 6” wide is via Stodmarsh Road, A257 Littlebourne Road, St Martin’s Hill, Longport, Lower Chantry Lane, St George’s Place, A28 Lower Bridge Street, Broad Street, Military Road, Tourtel Road, Sturry Road, Water Lane, Fordwich Road, King Street, High Street, Moat Lane and vice versa.
Due to the width restriction on Fordwich Road, the alternative route for through traffic wider than 6’6” is via A257 Littlebourne Road, Canterbury Road, The Hill, Jubilee Road, Court Hill, Eldridge Hill, Stodmarsh Road and vice versa.
Various Roads, Canterbury (Surfacing Scheme) (PROHIBITION OF DRIVING AND TEMPORARY 40 & 20 MPH SPEED RESTRICTION) TEMPORARY ORDER MARCH 2023
To allow carriageway preservation works to be carried out as part of a Surface Treatment Scheme, Kent County Council intends to make an Order prohibiting through traffic on various roads in Canterbury.
This Order takes effect on or after 17th March 2023 for a period of up to 18 months or until works have been completed. It may be necessary for some of the roads to be closed for multiple occasions for each phase of the works. Planned dates will be published in advanced of the works on One.Network and indicated by signage displayed on site 14 days before they start.
After the Surface Treatment works, a temporary speed limit of 40 & 20 mph may need to be imposed in place on certain roads for a period of up to 7 days. Where the 40 & 20 mph Speed Limit does apply, this will be clearly indicated by relevant signs displayed on site.
These works are subject to weather and other factors which may potentially cause changes at short notice; every effort will be made to keep as close as possible to the planned dates that are notified, and any changes will be publicised.

Nethergong Hill & Sandpit Hill, Upstreet
The roads will be closed from the junctions with A28 Island Road and Marley Lane, to the extent indicated by signs and barriers on site.
The alternative route is via Church Lane, Boyden Gate Hill, Highstead, Ford Hill, Maypole Road, Hoath Road, Bredlands Lane, A28 Island Road, The Glen and vice versa.
Denstroude Lane, Denstroude
The road will be closed between the junctions with A290 Honey Hill and Dargate Road, to the extent indicated by signs and barriers on site.
The alternative route is via Dargate Road, Plumpudding Lane, Dargate Road, Foxes Cross Hill, Fox’s Cross Road, A290 Pean Hill, and A290 Honey Hill and vice versa.
Firs Road (North of Woolage Green), Womenswold & C201 Ruberries Wood Road (From disctrict boundary to Nightingale Lane, Frogham)
The roads will be closed between the junctions with Forstal Road and The Street, Frogham, to the extent indicated by signs and barriers on site.
The alternative route is via The Street, Nightingale Lane, Sandwich Road Snowden, Sandwich Road Womenswold, Forstal Road and vice versa.
Hoath Road, Hoath
The road will be closed between the junctions with Hicks Forstal Road and Bredlands Lane, to the extent indicated by signs and barriers on site.
The alternative route is via Bredlands Lane, A28 Island Road, The Glen, Nethergong Hill, Sandpit Hill, Church Lane, Boyden Gate Hill, Highstead, Ford Hill, Maypole Road, and vice versa.
Chartham Downs Road, Chartham
The road will be closed between the junctions with Iffin Lane and Faussett Hill, to the extent indicated by signs and barriers on site.
The alternative route is via B2068 Street End (Stone Street), Redhouse Lane and vice versa.
Station Road & Pond Hill, Adisham
The roads will be closed between the junctions with B2046 Adisham Road and Bramling Downs Road (Bramling Road).
The alternative route is via B2068 Adisham Road, High Street, A257 Canterbury Road, Wingham Road, High Street, Bekesbourne Lane (The Green), Station Road, School Lane, Chalkpit Hill, Adisham Road, Adisham Downs Road and vice versa.
Thornden Wood Road, Herne Bay and Chestfield
The road will be closed between the junctions with Hackington Road and Owls Hatch Road, to the extent indicated by signs and barriers on site.
The alternative route is via Greenhill Road, A2990 Thanet Way, Chestfield Road, Radfall Hill (Radfall Road), Radfall Road, Hackington Road (Radfall Road) and vice versa.
High Street, Bridge
The road will be closed between the junctions with Town Hill and Conyngham Lane, to the extent indicated by signs and barriers on site.
The alternative route is via Town Hill, Bekesbourne Road, Bifrons Hill, Station Road, School Lane, Chalkpit Hill, Adisham Road, Adisham Downs Road, Pond Hill, Station Road, B2046 Adisham Road, Box Iron Road, A260 Old Dover Road, A2 Dover Road, Bonnybush Slip Westbound Off, Bonnybush Hill, Bridge Hill, High Street Bridge and vice versa.
St Stephen’s Hill, Canterbury
The road will be closed between the junctions with Downs Road and Beaconsfield Road, to the extent indicated by signs and barrier.
The alternative route is via Downs Road, Tenterden Road, Farleigh Road, Broad Oak Road, St Stephen's Road, St Stephen's Hill, and vice versa.
Chestfield Road, Chestfield
The road will be closed between the junctions with South Street and Maydowns Road, to the extent indicated by signs and barriers on site.
The alternative route is via A2990 Thanet Way, Greenhill Road, Thornden Wood Road, Hackington Road (Radfall Road), Radfall Road, Radfall Hill (Radfall Road) and vice versa.
Speed Restrictions
It will be necessary to impose a 40 mph speed limit on the approach to, and then a 20 mph speed limit through, working sites on various roads in Canterbury, as detailed below.
Nethergong Hill & Sandpit Hill, Upstreet - between the junctions with A28 Island Road and Marley Lane.
Denstroude Lane, Denstroude - between the junctions with A290 Honey Hill and Dargate Road.
Firs Road (North of Woolage Green), Womenswold & C201 Wood Road (From district boundary to Nightingale Lane, Frogham) - between the junctions with Forstal Road and The Street, Frogham.
Hoath Road, Hoath - between the junctions with Hicks Forstal Road and Bredlands Lane.
Chartham Downs Road, Chartham - between the junctions with Iffin Lane and Faussett Hill.
Station Road, Adisham - between the junctions with B2046 Adisham Road and Bramling Downs Road.
