M1 Restriction and Closures between Junction 31 to Junction 36

What is happening?

ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 - SECTION 15
THE M1 MOTORWAY (JUNCTION 31 TO JUNCTION 36)
(TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC)
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited intends to make an Order on the M1 Motorway, in the Counties of South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire, to enable construction of additional places of relative safety with associated technology and advancing signing infrastructure works to be carried out in safety.
The works are expected to start on Monday 24 October 2022 and will remain in force until the works are completed, an estimated period of 19 months.

The effect of the Order will be, for 24 hours a day, at times during the works, to:
(i) impose a temporary 60mph, 50mph and 40mph speed restriction on the M1 northbound carriageway from 2000 metres south of the entry slip road at Junction 32 (Thurcroft Interchange M1 J32 and M18) to 800 metres north of the exit slip road at Junction 35A (Stockbridge Interchange), a distance of 18,270 metres;
(ii) impose a temporary 60mph, 50mh and 40mph speed restriction on the M1 southbound carriageway from 630 metres north of the exit slip exit slip road at Junction 36 (Tankersley Interchange) to 830 metres south of the exit slip road at Junction 32, a distance of 19,790 metres
(iii) impose a temporary 60mph, 50mph and 40mph speed restriction on the M1 northbound exit slip road at Junction 32;
(iv) ban vehicles with an overall width exceeding 9’6” and 6’6” in specified lanes of the M1 as described in (i) and (ii);
(v) close the emergency refuge area adjacent to the M1 northbound carriageway approximately 1590 metres north of the entry slip road at Junction 33 (Brinsworth Interchange);
(vi) close the emergency refuge area adjacent to the M1 northbound carriageway approximately 2080 metres north of the entry slip road at Junction 34 (Tinsley Viaduct);
(vii) close the emergency refuge area adjacent to the M1 northbound carriageway approximately 928 metre north of the entry slip road at Junction 35 (Thorpe Hesley Interchange);
(viii) close the emergency refuge areas adjacent to the M1 southbound carriageway approximately 1080 metre south of the entry slip road at Junction 35A;
(ix) close the emergency refuge area adjacent to the M1 southbound carriageway approximately 1200 metres south of the entry slip road at Junction 35;
(x) close the emergency refuge area adjacent to the M1 southbound carriageway approximately 879 metres south of the entry slip road at Junction 34; and
(xi) close the emergency refuge area adjacent to the M1 southbound carriageway approximately 1600 metres south of the entry slip road at Junction 33. It will also be necessary to close between 6am and 8pm, at times during the works the:
(xii) M1 northbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 31 (Aston Interchange) to the entry slip road at Junction 32, a distance of 5260 metres;
(xiii) M1 northbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 32 to the entry slip road at Junction 33, a distance of 6340 metres;
(xiv) M1 northbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 33 to the entry slip road at Junction 34, a distance of 6210 metres;
(xv) M1 northbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 34 to the entry slip road at Junction 35, a distance of 6580 metres;
(xvi) M1 northbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 35 to the entry slip road at Junction 36, a distance of 6030 metres;
(xvii) M1 southbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 36 to the entry slip road at Junction 35A, a distance of 3050 metres;
(xviii) M1 southbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 36 to the entry slip road at Junction 35, a distance of 6030 metres;
(xix) M1 southbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 35 to the entry slip road at Junction 34, a distance of 6580 metres;
(xx) M1 southbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 34 to the entry slip road at Junction 33, a distance of 6210 metres;
(xxi) M1 southbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 33 to the entry slip road at Junction 32, a distance of 6200 metres;
(xxii) M1 southbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 33 to the entry slip road at Junction 31, a distance of 8939 metres;
(xxiii) M1 northbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 32 to the entry slip road at Junction 32, a distance of 2640 metres;
(xxiv) M1 northbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 33 to the entry slip road at Junction 33, a distance of 1130 metres;
(xxv) M1 northbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 34 to the entry slip road at Junction 34, a distance of 2150 metres;
(xxvi) M1 northbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 35 to the entry slip road at Junction 35, a distance of 1030 metres;
(xxvii) M1 northbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 35A to the entry slip road at Junction 36, a distance of 3100 metres;
(xxviii) M1 southbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 36 to the entry slip road at Junction 35A, a distance of 3060 metres;
(xxix) M1 southbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 35 to the entry slip road at Junction 35, a distance of 1030 metres;
(xxx) M1 southbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 34 to the entry slip road at Junction 34, a distance 2150 metres;
(xxxi) M1 southbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 33 to the entry slip road at Junction 33, a distance of 1130 metres; and
(xxxii) M1 southbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 32 to the entry slip road at Junction 32, a distance of 2310 metres.

Traffic management will be in force 24 hours a day and traffic signs will indicate the extent of the restrictions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or special forces vehicles) and prohibitions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or vehicles being used in connection with the said works or for winter maintenance or traffic officer purposes).
