LONDON BOROUGH OF BROMLEY

COUNCIL TAX EMPTY PROPERTY PREMIUM

The Local Government Finance Act 1992 was amended through the Levelling-Up and Regeneration Act 2023 so that Local Authorities can apply a council tax premium on homes which have been empty for 1 or more years.

At a meeting of the Council’s Executive on the 28th October 2026 the decision was made to revise the Council’s current policy, reducing the period for which a property can be empty before a premium is applied from 2 years to 1 year.

The change is to take effect from 1st April 2027.
