Epping Forest - Revision of the Register of Commoners for the Election of Verderers
What is happening?
CITY OF LONDON CORPORATION
EPPING FOREST ACT 1878
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN
of the intention of the Conservators of Epping Forest to revise the Register of Commoners of Epping Forest for the purpose of the Election of Verderers.
All owners and occupiers of lands and tenements lying within the ancient boundary of Epping Forest, as set forth in the perambulation made by authority of Parliament in the seventeenth year of King Charles the First, claiming to be entitled to a right of common in or over Epping Forest are required to send to me their claims to have their names inserted on such Register. Forms for this purpose may be obtained at the office of the Electoral Services, Town Clerk’s Department, PO Box 270, Guildhall, London, EC2P 2EJ, by email electoralservices@cityoflondon.gov.uk, on the website www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/voting, by calling 020 3838 1458; or at the office of the Superintendent of Epping Forest, The Warren, Loughton, Essex IG10 4RW.
Such claims must be sent in on or before the 30th September 2026, and the Conservators are entitled to require reasonable proof of the title of each claimant.
To prevent unnecessary claims being sent in, the Conservators give notice that they will not consider any person entitled to a right of Common of pasture who owns or occupies less than half an acre of old enclosure not covered with buildings, nor will any Claim be allowed in respect of lands quieted in title either by the Epping Forest Act 1878 or by any Order made by the Arbitrator appointed by that Act.
The following provisions of the Act apply to such Register:
“The register shall be made in two parts, Part I being for the northern Forest parishes, namely: Epping Theydon Bois, Loughton, Waltham Holy Cross, Chingford and Chigwell (now Buckhurst Hill); and Part II being for the southern Forest parishes namely: Woodford, Walthamstow, Leyton, Wanstead, Little Ilford (now East Ham) and West Ham”.
“Where a commoner is under age or of unsound mind, his or her guardian or committee shall be entitled to be on the register in his or her place”.
“Where several persons are joint-tenants, co-parceners, or tenants in common, in respect of rights of common, they shall in respect thereof be considered as one; and such one of them only shall be entered on the register as the majority of them select in writing, or in case they are equally divided or decline to select, then as the Conservators select”.
The Conservators will give notice when the Register is ready for inspection and of the days appointed by them for correcting the Register.
Ian Thomas CBE Town Clerk Guildhall London, EC2P 2EJ
