What is happening?

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Authority
Local Authorities (Members’ Allowances) (England) Regulations 2003

At a Fire Authority meeting held on 19 March 2026, following receipt of a report from its Independent Renumeration Panel, the Authority agreed an Allowances Scheme for 2026/2027.

The Independent Remuneration Panel recommended that the Basic Allowance and Special Responsibility Allowances payable by the Fire Authority remain linked to any corresponding increase in the Grey Book staff pay award in the same year.

The provisions of the Scheme adopted for 2026/2027 are set out below:

Leader of Majority Party in Opposition 3,606
Where there is no single majority party in opposition and there is equal representation of any opposition parties on the Joint Authority, the allowance payable to the Leader of the Majority Party in Opposition shall be shared equally between the Leaders of the Parties who are so represented.
Co-optees’ Allowances:
Chair - Governance, Risk and Audit Scrutiny Committee 3,713
Independent Member of Governance, Risk and 1,857

Audit Scrutiny Committee Carer’s allowance

Actual expenditure up to a maximum of the equivalent of the current National Living Wage or National Minimum Wage hourly rate, as appropriate, dependent upon the age of the worker. The rate applicable shall be subject to automatic increases in line with uprating of the Adult National Living Wage and National Minimum Wage.

Travel Allowances (for elected members and co-optees)
Motor Cycle allowance 24p per mile
Bicycle Allowance 20p per mile
Car Allowance 45p per mile for first 10,000 miles and 25p thereafter
Passenger Supplement 5p per mile for the passenger (not exceeding 4).

The above rates match His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs authorised mileage rates and will be updated when HMRC publishes revised allowances.

Copies are available free of charge. The report can also be viewed at www.twfire.gov.uk and www.sunderland.gov.uk.
