What is happening?

ENVIRONMENT AGENCY Water Resources Act 1991 (as amended by the Water Act 2003) Notice of application for a transfer licence to abstract (take) water

Costain Limited has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application, in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is for a licence to abstract water from outlined excavations comprising of superficial clay, silt and sand all within an area defined by National Grid References: SD 82425 05610, SD 82890 05610, SD 82425 07312, SD 82890 07312 at M60/M62/M66 Simister Island Interchange, Simister, Manchester, to transfer it via existing highways drainage outfalls to Castle Brook and Parr Brook without intervening use.

The total abstraction volumes are estimated as follows:

    • 39 cubic metres an hour

    • 933 cubic metres a day

  • 93,487 cubic metres a year.

The licence will be used for dewatering to maintain suitable conditions within the excavations while construction works take place. The largest excavation is proposed at 114 metres (m) length, 65m width and 5.5m depth.
