What is happening?
PORTLAND URBAN DISTRICT COMMON
The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds has applied to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for consent under section 38 of the Commons Act 2006 to carry out restricted works on Portland Urban District Common. The Planning Inspectorate will decide the application on behalf of the Secretary of State.
The proposed works are an electric fence of approx. 17,400 square metres, a hedgehog exclusion fence of approx. 21,000 square metres, an outer rope line of approx. 67,000 square metres and a small observation hide/shelter of 2.1m x 2.1m by 1.8m high.
The works will be located on Chesil Beach, about 500m to the northwest of the Wild Chesil Centre at a site of breeding little terns between April and August each year.
A copy of the application form and accompanying documents can be inspected at Wild Chesil Centre, Portland Beach Road, Portland, DT9 9XE between 10am and 4pm every day until the 5th July 2026.
