St Bees – Public Footpath Diversion and Definitive Map Order
What is happening?

CUMBERLAND COUNCIL
(FOOTPATH NO 422011 PARISH OF ST BEES (FORMERLY ROTINGTON) AND FOOTPATH NO 423007 PARISH OF ST BEES) PUBLIC PATH DIVERSION AND DEFINITIVE MAP AND STATEMENT MODIFICATION ORDER 2024
On the 25 November 2025 Cumberland Council confirmed the above order made under Section 119 of the Highways Act 1980 and Section 53 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
The effect of the Order, as confirmed is to divert the following sections of public footpath:-
The whole width of that length of public footpath no 422011 at Pow Beck Sandwith in the parish of St Bees (formerly Rottington) from grid reference 298462 514124 southwestwards, southwards and southwestwards for about 211 metres to grid reference 298331 513998; to run from grid reference 298462 514124 southwestwards for about 183 metres to grid reference 298331 513998. The width of the path will be 2 metres.
The whole width of that length of public footpath no 423007 at Scalegill Beck in the parish of St Bees from grid reference 298757 514154 east-southeastwards for about 147 metres to grid reference 298902 514130; to run from 298757 514154 northeastwards for about 155 metres to grid reference 298895 514224. The width of the path will be 2 metres.

Details of the Order are available on the Council’s website and copies of the Order may be purchased at a cost of £2 per A4 sheet and £3 per A3 sheet. The Order comes into force on 3 December 2025, but if a person aggrieved by the Order wants to question its validity, or that of any provision contained in it, on the ground that it is not within the powers of the Highways Act 1980, as amended, or on the ground that any requirement of the Act, as amended, or of any regulation made under the Act has not been complied with in relation to the order, he or she may, under paragraph 3 of Schedule 2 to the Act as applied by paragraph 5 of Schedule 6 to the Act, within 6 weeks from 3 December 2025 make an application to the High Court.
