BARNHAM CROSS COMMON

Thetford Town Council has applied to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, for consent under section 38 of the Commons Act 2006, to retain existing fencing, previously agreed (COM732), September 2015, Barnham Cross Common. The Planning Inspectorate will decide the application on behalf of the Secretary of State.

The application is to:

  • Retain the current 4635 metres of Perimeter Stock Fencing around the boundary of the 67.3 hectare area designated  as Site of Scientific Interest
  • Retain gates on existing vehicular points for management and emergency services
  • Retain kissing gates on existing pedestrian entry points

Existing pedestrian access continues as before with the use of kissing gates on all main points of entry. The fencing is regular stock fencing with two strands of plain wire at the top. This work came from a programme of restoration for the site, supported by PlantLife Project and Higher Level Stewardship Scheme, which has provided suitable conditions for plants previously lost from the site.

A copy of the application form and accompanying documents can be inspected at Thetford Town Council Offices, The Carnegie, Cage Lane, Thetford, IP24 2DS, during normal reception office hours (between 10:00 and 16:00), Monday to Friday, until 14th December 2025. A hard copy of the application form and accompanying documents may also be obtained by writing to Thetford Town Council as above.

Any objections or representations should be sent in writing ON or BEFORE the 14th December 2025 to:

  • The Planning Inspectorate at Room 3/25B, Hawk Wing, Temple Quay House, 2 The Square, Temple Quay, Bristol, BS1 6PN or commonlandcasework@pins.gsi.gov.uk
  • Town Clerk, Thetford Town Council, The Carnegie, Cage Lane, Thetford, IP24 2DS
