CAMBRIDGE CITY COUNCIL notice under Section 18 CLEAN AIR ACT 1993

NOTICE IN RESPECT OF THE DISTRICT OF CAMBRIDGE CITY - SMOKE CONTROL REVOCATION ORDER 2026

Notice is hereby given that Cambridge City Council (“the Council”) of PO Box 700, Cambridge CB1 0JH proposes to make an Order, in the exercise of its powers under Section 18 of the Clean Air Act 1993 (“the Act”) to:

revoke previous Smoke Control Orders as listed in Schedule 1 and any others referring to areas previously declared, in so far as they apply to the area of Cambridge City Council;

The revocation of the existing Orders shall come into operation on 1st November 2026, if confirmed by the Secretary of State, being a date not less than six months after the date of the decision.

The effect of this would be that, on any day after the proposed Order comes into operation, the regulatory controls relating to smoke control as set out in the Act will no longer apply.

The consultation will run from midday on Monday 20th October 2025 until 5:00pm on Friday 19th December 2025. During this period, hard copies of the proposed Order can be viewed at Customer Service Centre, Mandela House, Regent Street, Cambridge CB2 1BY, Wednesdays to Fridays, between 9:00 and 17:15 only.

Alternatively, a copy may be viewed on the Council’s website: https://www.cambridge.gov.uk/smoke-control-area-changes or upon request via eqg@cambridge.gov.uk.

Within the period, 20 October to 19 December 2025, any person who will be affected by the Order may raise an objection to the revocation of the Smoke Control Orders by giving notice in writing to DEFRA, either by email at: Air.Quality@defra.gov.uk Or by post to the following address:

All objections should be clearly headed ‘Objection to the Revocation of Smoke Control Orders in Cambridge’.
