Mwynglawdd Wemyss – Gwaith Atal Erydiad ar Nant Cwmnewydion
Mae Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru yn rhoi hysbysiad ei fod yn bwriadu cynnal gwaith atal erydiad ym Mwynglawdd Wemyss, a leolir tua 15 km i’r de-ddwyrain o Aberystwyth (NGR SN 71575 74095).
Mae’r gwaith atal erydiad wedi’i leoli yn rhan ddeheuol prif domen sborion mwynglawdd Wemyss sy’n cynnwys gwastraff mwynglawdd o fwyngloddiau metel hanesyddol. Mae’r deunydd hwn yn cynnwys symiau sylweddol o fetelau ac mae’n agored i erydiad gan nant Nant Cwmnewydion sy’n llifo ar hyd gwaelod y domen. Ar hyn o bryd mae tomen y mwynglawdd yn erydu yn gyflym, gan gyfrannu at lygredd metelau mewn cyrsiau dŵr i lawr yr afon.
Mae Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru yn cynnig mesurau i atal Nant Cwmnewydion rhag dod i gysylltiad â’r domen, gan leihau erydiad gwastraff mwyngloddiau a llygredd i lawr yr afon. Mae’r gwaith arfaethedig yn cynnwys newid llwybr presennol Nant Cwmnewydion trwy greu crafiad, gosod rholiau creigiau ar hyd glan ogleddol y cwrs dŵr newydd ac ôl-lenwi’r crafion cloddio a thocion coed y tu ôl i’r rholiau creigiau ar hyd troed y domen i greu bwnd.
Mae angen cael gwared ar bedair coeden fwy i gyflawni’r prosiect, gyda deunydd coediog a thocion o’r coed yn cael eu hailddefnyddio yn y cynllun. Bydd coed cyll penodol yn cael eu tocio ac, os oes angen, eu symud o un ochr i’r lan i’r bwnd arfaethedig. Bydd pwmp a llinell bwmpio yn cael eu defnyddio i bwmpio Nant Cwmnewydion o amgylch yr ardal waith. Bydd amddiffyniad rhag silt ar waith i sicrhau nad oes unrhyw waddod mân yn mynd i mewn i’r cwrs dŵr yn ystod y gwaith.
Mae Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru o’r farn nad yw’r gwaith gwella yn debygol o gael effeithiau negyddol sylweddol ar yr amgylchedd ac nid yw’n bwriadu paratoi Datganiad Amgylcheddol ar eu cyfer. Er nad oes bwriad o gynhyrchu Datganiad Amgylcheddol, mae’r cynllun wedi ystyried ffactorau amgylcheddol sy’n gysylltiedig â’r safle a chafodd Cynllun Gweithredu Amgylcheddol ei baratoi i’w ddefnyddio yn ystod y prosiect.
Gellir cael gwybodaeth am y Cynllun Gweithredu Amgylcheddol a dyluniad y cynllun o’r cyswllt isod.
Dylai unrhyw un sy’n dymuno cyflwyno sylwadau mewn perthynas ag effeithiau amgylcheddol tebygol y gwaith gwella arfaethedig wneud hynny, yn ysgrifenedig, a’u hanfon i’r cyfeiriad a nodir isod, o fewn 30 diwrnod i ddyddiad cyhoeddi’r hysbysiad hwn.

NATURAL RESOURCES WALES
ANNOUNCEMENT OF INTENTION NOT TO PREPARE AN ENVIRONMENTAL STATEMENT Regulation 12B of the Environmental Impact Assessment (Land Drainage Improvement Works) SI1999/1783 as amended
Wemyss Mine – Erosion Prevention Works on Nant Cwmnewydion
Natural Resources Wales gives notice that it proposes to carry out erosion prevention works at Wemyss Mine, located approximately 15 km southeast of Aberystwyth (NGR SN 71575 74095).
The erosion prevention works are located on the south section of the main Wemyss mine spoil tip which consists of mine waste from historical metal mine workings. This material contains signification quantities of metals and is susceptible to erosion by the Nant Cwmnewydion stream which flows along the base of the tip. The mine tip is currently eroding at an accelerated rate, contributing to metals pollution in downstream watercourses. Natural Resources Wales proposes measures to prevent the Nant Cwmnewydion from coming into contact with the tip, reducing erosion of mine waste and pollution downstream.
The proposed works involve altering the current flow path of the Nant Cwmnewydion by creating a scrape, installing rock rolls along the northern bank of the new watercourse and backfilling excavation arisings and tree brash behind the rock rolls along the toe of the tip to create a bund.
The removal of four larger trees is required to deliver the project, with woody material and brash from the trees being reused in the scheme. Identified hazel trees will be coppiced and if necessary translocated from one side of the bank into the proposed bund. A pump and pump line will be used to over pump the Nant Cwmnewydion around the working area. Silt protection will be in place to ensure no fine sediment enters the watercourse during the works.
Natural Resources Wales consider that the improvement works are not likely to have significant negative effects on the environment and do not intend to prepare an Environmental Statement in respect of them. Although an Environmental Statement is not proposed, the scheme design has considered environmental factors associated with the site and an Environmental Action Plan (EAP) has been prepared for use during the project.
EAP and scheme design information can be obtained from the contact below.
Any person wishing to make representations in relation to the likely environmental effects of the proposed improvement works should do so, in writing, to the address specified below, within 30 days of the date of publication of this notice.
