What is happening?

INDEPENDENT MEMBER – AUDIT, RISK AND STANDARDS COMMITTEE
Great Yarmouth Borough Council is seeking to appoint an Independent Member to its Audit, Risk and Standards Committee.
This is a key role in supporting the Council’s governance, risk management, and financial oversight.

Location: Great Yarmouth Borough Council

Remuneration: Allowance payable plus Expenses

About the Role:

    • Attend and contribute to approx. 4 in-person meetings per year, plus training sessions.

    • Offer independent insight on financial governance, risk, audit, and internal controls.

    • Support the committee’s politically neutral and independent stance.

    • Co-opted members do not have voting rights but play a vital consultative role.

What We’re Looking For:

    • Experience or knowledge in audit, risk management, and financial governance.

    • Strong analytical, communication, and advocacy skills.

    • High personal integrity, discretion, and political neutrality.

    • Ideally, you should have local ties to Great Yarmouth or Norfolk.

Eligibility Criteria: Applicants must not:

    • Be a councillor or officer of the Council or have been so in the preceding five years prior to appointment.

    • Be related to, or a close friend of, any councillor or officer of the Council.

    • Have been convicted of any offence attracting a sentence of imprisonment whether suspended or not for less than a period of 3 months without the option of a fine. The Council has the right to DBS check any independent committee members.

    • Be an undischarged bankrupt.

    • Have significant business dealings with the Council.

    • Have a formal connection with any political group.

    • Be an employee or the holder of a significant office in an organisation with close commercial links with the Council.

    • Have Council Tax, Business Rates arrears or other debts owing to the Council.
