Council Tax Changes for Long-Term Empty Properties from April 2026
At the Full Council meeting held on 27 February 2025, East Hampshire District Council approved a change to the Council Tax Empty Property Premium policy. From 1 April 2026, the qualifying period for the premium will be reduced from two years to one year. This means that from 1 April 2026, any property that has been empty and unfurnished for 12 months or more will be subject to a 100% premium on their Council Tax bill. In effect, owners of such properties will pay 200% Council Tax. The Empty Property Premium Structure is: Properties empty and unfurnished between one and five years: 100% premium (200% Council Tax) Properties empty and unfurnished for five years or more: 200% premium (300% Council Tax) Properties empty and unfurnished for ten years or more: 300% premium (400% Council Tax) This change is part of the council’s ongoing efforts to bring empty homes back into use and support the availability of housing across the district.
