What is happening?

PUBLIC NOTICE COMMONS ACT 2006 - SECTION 38 PROPOSED WORKS ON SUMMER MARSH, TROUGH HEAD, ISLE OF WALNEY COMMON

Westmorland and Furness Council has applied to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for consent under section 38 of the Commons Act 2006 to carry out restricted works on Summer Marsh, Trough Head, Isle of Walney Common. The Planning Inspectorate will decide the application on behalf of the Secretary of State.

The proposed works would comprise the following three principal elements:

  • Reprofiling of landfill site edge facing the beach to create a gentle slope topped with coir matting to promote vegetation regrowth;

  • Construction of a 250m length of improved erosion protection revetment reusing existing rock armour where appropriate; and

  • Landscaping and enhancement measures to provide improved slope stabilisation and work towards a 10% biodiversity enhancement requirement.

The works will be located on Summer Marsh, Trough Head, Isle of Walney Common. A copy of the application form and accompanying documents can be inspected at Barrow Library Ramsden Square, Barrow-in-Furness LA14 1LL during normal office hours until 16 May 2025.
