Scotland is a world leader in the fight against climate change.
Our country has a target of Net Zero carbon emissions by 2045, with the UK aiming for Net Zero by 2050.
To help meet those targets, SP Energy Networks needs to strengthen Scotland’s electricity transmission network so we can transport increasing amounts of clean, green energy from where it’s produced to where it’s needed. These new generation sources are often located in more rural areas than the older fossil fuelled sources they are replacing, which tend to be in or close to urban areas.
SP Transmission PLC (SPT) has a crucial role to play in that its transmission network enables the bulk transfer of renewable energy generated within its licence area, as well as within Scottish and Southern Electricity Network (SSEN) Transmission’s licence area in the north of Scotland, south to the wider nation.
To ensure the security of supply to the wider national electricity network, SSEN have identified a need to uprate and reinforce the Argyll transmission network from 132kV to 275kV operation. This up-rated route ties into the existing YX 275kV double circuit Overhead Line (OHL) route at Cruachan, Argyll & Bute. The YX route connects to the existing YW 275kV double circuit OHL route at Dalmally, Argyll & Bute which connects to the Windyhill substation in Milngavie. The YX and YW route are owned by SPEN.
Preliminary surveys have identified that certain topographical infringements of the safety zones below specific spans (i.e., sections between towers) are present on the YW 275kV double circuit OHL route between Dalmally and Windyhill.
As a result, works are necessary to reduce power outages and thereby maintain electricity supply. Solutions to remove the infringements are:
1. Ground re-profiling;
2. Increasing the tower heights at the end of the span; and/or
3. Replacing the crossarm system.
The YW route starts in Argyll & Bute before entering the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park area which is an environmentally sensitive area and requires Section 37 consent with the application being accompanied by an Environmental Impact Assessment.
The focus of this consultation event is on the works proposed on the YW overhead line route within the national park.
Our consultation period runs between 26th February and 26th March 2025.
We are holding one public exhibition at Kinlochard Village Hall on 26th February 2025 between 14.30 and 19.00.
