Is your child due to start primary or secondary school in August 2025?
Primary 1 School Registration
If your child’s date of birth is between 1 March 2020 and 28 February 2021, they are due to start primary school in August 2025.
If you are in the City of Edinburgh Council area you must register your child for P1 using our online registration form www.edinburgh.gov.uk/p1registration. Registration opens on Friday 1st November 2024 and should be completed by Friday 15th November 2024.
Each address is within a catchment area for a non-denominational and a Roman Catholic (RC) school. If you want your child to be taught in Gaelic, you can register at Bunsgoil Taobh na Pairce. No knowledge of Gaelic is needed for entry to P1.
Every Primary School will host an Open Day on Wednesday 6th November 2024. Each school will share details locally.
Secondary 1 School Places
Children in P7 living in the City of Edinburgh Council area are allocated a place at one of their catchment secondary schools. If your child attends a non-denominational primary school, a place will be allocated in the non-denominational catchment high school. If your child attends a Roman Catholic primary school, a place will be allocated in the Roman Catholic catchment high school. We’ll send a letter in early November to confirm which secondary school we have allocated for your child.
Applying for a different school
You can make a placing request for a school outside your catchment area. You must apply by 24 December 2024. If you are registering for P1 you can make your placing request at the same time. For children starting S1 you can make a placing request online at www.edinburgh.gov.uk/placingrequest from 1st November 2024.
