What is happening?

SWARTH MOOR COMMON

Yorkshire Peat Partnership has applied to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for consent under section 38 of the Commons Act 2006 to carry out restricted works on Swarth Moor Common. The Planning Inspectorate will decide the application on behalf of the Secretary of State.

The proposed works are: (i) to block 654m of drainage channels with peat dams; (ii) to install 8 stone and 10 timber sediment traps in drainage channels; (iii) to install 800m of peat bunds and 220 coir log bunds in eroded areas and channels; (iv) to create up 3 ponds with a maximum combined area 300m2.

The works will be located on a 11.17 hectare area of Swarth Moor north of Austwick Road. They are intended to restore the hydrology of the lagg fen habitat and increase biodiversity. A copy of the application form and accompanying documents can be inspected at Settle Tourist Information Centre, Town Hall, Cheapside, SETTLE, BD24 9EJ during normal opening hours until 15/01/2023.
