The above order was made on 23rd July 2026. The effect of the order will be to stop up:

• Public footpath Leigh No. 85 is described in the Definitive Statement for Leigh as: “Footpath commences at the jct. with Footpaths 73 and 74 and proceeds S. across pasture for about 75 yds. Not very well defined. Joins with footpaths 86 and 88 in middle of field.” There is no width stated within the definitive statement for public footpath Leigh No.85. The full width of this public footpath is to be stopped up at its junction with public footpath Leigh No. 73 & 74 at Point A on the map at grid reference 367675 401143, in a southerly direction for approximately 71 metres to its junction with public footpath No.86 and 88 at Point B on the map at grid reference 367690 401073.

• Public footpath Leigh No. 86 is described in the Definitive Statement for Leigh as: “Starts at the above jct. and runs downhill to centre post stile in dip at gap in hedges. Proceeds due E, running on the S. side of bank with hedges on top. Bank gradually petering out and footpath ends at jct. with estate road.” There is no width stated within the definitive statement for public footpath Leigh No.86. The full width of this public footpath is to be stopped up at its junction with public footpaths Leigh No. 85 & 88 at Point B on the map at grid reference 367690 401073, in an easterly direction for approximately 226 metres to its termination at the junction of Regent Drive and Imperial Drive at Point C on the map at grid reference 367912 401086.

• Public footpath Leigh No. 88 is described in the Definitive Statement for Leigh as: “Footpath commences at stile on the No. side of footpath 99 and proceeds N. across open fields rising sharply to another stile some 130 yds. on. Continues from this point across pasture field to third stile after a further 75 yds. continuing to jct. with footpaths 86 and 85.” There is no width stated within the definitive statement for public footpath Leigh No.88. The full width of this public footpath is to be stopped up at its junction with Queensway at Point D on the map at grid reference 367736 400787, in a northerly direction for approximately 292 metres to its junction with public footpaths Leigh No. 85 & 86 at Point B on the map at grid reference 367690 401073.

Create an alternative:

• Public footpath Leigh No. 86A will run from Queensway at Point H on the map at grid reference 367870 401162 in a westerly direction for approximately 168 metres to public footpath Leigh No. 74 at Point G on the map at grid reference 367708 401167. The surface will be natural grassland, 1.5 metres wide. At approximate grid reference 367713 401166 there is an A-frame barrier.

• Public footpath Leigh No. 88A will run from Queensway at Point E on the map at grid reference 367779 400885 in a westerly direction for approximately 478 metres to public footpath Leigh No. 72 & 73 at Point F at grid reference 367387 400985. The surface will be bitmac and 2 metres wide.

A copy of the Order and the Order map be seen free of charge at the Town Hall, Library Street, Wigan, WN1 1YN from 9.00 am to 4.30 pm on any day Monday to Friday or requested by emailing libby.gill@wigan.gov.uk.

Any representation about or objection to the Order may be sent or delivered in writing addressed to the Chief Legal Officer at the Town Hall, Library Street, Wigan, WN1 1YN not later than 3rd September 2026. Please state the grounds on which it is made. If no such representations or objections are duly made, or if any so made are withdrawn, Wigan Borough Council may itself confirm the Order as an unopposed Order. If the Order is sent to the Secretary of State for confirmation any representations or objections which have not been withdrawn will be sent with the Order.
