What is planned?

PUBLIC NOTICE by Westminster City Council

Notice is hereby given that Westminster City Council proposes to make an order under sub-section 247 (2A) of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 (“the 1990 Act”), the general effect of which will be to authorise the stopping up of an area of 243.43 square metres in the horizontal plane in Atterbury Street, and 625.5 square metres in the horizontal plane in Millbank to enable the development to be carried out at the premises Tate Britain, Millbank, London, SW1P 4RG; namely the alteration to the frontage and flank arrangement of those premises.

The parts of the respective highways that the proposed order would authorise to be stopped up comprise:

(b) the length of the highway Atterbury Street situated between 56.56 metres and 41.55 metres from the highway Millbank, parallel to the middle line of Atterbury Street, and extending from the ground floor external wall of the Building in a direction that is perpendicular to that middle line of Atterbury Street, by 9.36 metres 56.56 metres from the highway Millbank, and 9.15 metres 41.55 metres from the highway Millbank;

(c) the length of the highway Atterbury Street situated between 41.55 metres and 11.03 metres from the highway Millbank, parallel to the middle line of Atterbury Street, and extending from the ground floor external wall of the Building in a direction that is perpendicular to that middle line of Atterbury Street, by 3.42 metres along that complete length;

(d) the length of the highway Millbank that extends in a direction that is perpendicular to the middle line of the carriageway of Millbank by (i) 8.29 metres between 21.23 metres and 34.76 metres from Atterbury Street, (ii) 16.69 metres between 34.76 metres and 45.76 metres from Atterbury Street, (iii) 7.08 metres between 45.76 metres and 56.37 metres from Atterbury Street, (iv) 16.26 metres between 56.37 metres and 67.37 metres from Atterbury Street, and (v) 8.04 metres between 67.37 metres and 81.43 metres from Atterbury Street.

The order and plan identifying the location of the highway proposed to be stopped up may be inspected free of charge between 11am and 5pm Mondays to Fridays at Westminster City Hall, 64 Victoria Street, London, SW1E 6QP, during a period of 28 days from the date of this notice. Please telephone +44(0)7811238194 to arrange an appointment. Alternatively you may e-mail jperkins@westminster.gov.uk for a copy.

Any person may, within that period, object to the making of the order by notice to Westminster City Council, at City Hall, 64 Victoria Street, SW1E 6QP.

This notice is given pursuant to section 252 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990. Westminster City Council granted permission for the development under part three of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 on 12 February 2026.
