PLANNING (LISTED BUILDINGS AND CONSERVATION AREAS) ACT 1990 - SECTION 69 DESIGNATION OF THE WINDERMERE VILLAS CONSERVATION AREA
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that Lake District National Park Authority, pursuant to Section 69 of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990, has designated the area described in the Schedule below as a Conservation Area due to its special architectural or historic interest. The designation took effect on June 24th 2026. A map defining the designated area and copies of the Conservation Area Appraisal can be inspected free of charge during normal office hours at Lake District National Park Authority, Wayfaring House, Murley Moss Business Park, Oxenholme Road, Kendal LA9 7RL and online at Windermere Villas Conservation Area - Lake District National Park.
Principal Legal Effects of the Designation:
1. Demolition:Planning permission is required for the demolition of most buildings and structures (including certain walls and fences) within the area.
2. Trees: Six weeks' notice in writing must be given to the Council before any hacking, lopping, topping, or felling of trees within the area.
SCHEDULE: Description of the Designated Areas The Windermere Villas Conservation Area comprises three separate geographical zones situated within and adjacent to Lake Windermere, more particularly described as follows:
1. Belle Isle: The entirety of Belle Isle, including the main 18th-century mansion house, ancillary island structures, historic designed parklands, domestic gardens, boathouses, and the surrounding foreshore.
2. Cockshot Point: The promontory and lakeside parkland located immediately south of Bowness Bay, encompassing the open green space and the immediate shoreline infrastructure.
3. Eastern Lakeshore Corridor: A continuous strip of land on the eastern shore of Lake Windermere stretching south of Ferry Nab down to the northern boundary of the Great Tower Plantation, incorporating Storrs Park, Bellman Landing, Louper Weir and Stewardson Nab, historic villa estates including the Grade I listed Blackwell Arts and Crafts house, Grade I listed Broad Leys and the historic peninsular grounds of the Grade II* Storrs Hall Hotel. Enclosing lakeside tracts of ancient woodland the area terminates at the premises and grounds of the Beech Hill Hotel. In the event of any discrepancy between this written Schedule and the official Designation Map titled 'Windermere Villas - Proposed Conservation Area Boundary', the boundary line shown on the Designation Map shall prevail.
