SUPPLEMENTARY PLANNING DOCUMENT

Notice is hereby given that Wakefield Council adopted the Wakefield District Design Code Supplementary Planning Document (“SPD”) on 16 June 2026.

The adopted SPD provides detailed guidance on improving the quality of the design of new development across the Wakefield district, in the context of relevant policies within the Wakefield District Local Plan (adopted 24 January 2024) and is a material consideration when determining planning applications.

Consultation on the SPD took place for 8 weeks from Thursday 20 November 2025 until 5pm Wednesday 14 January 2026. The Consultation Statement summarises the main issues raised through the formal consultation and sets out how these have been taken into account in the SPD. The SPD is also accompanied by a Strategic Environmental Assessment Screening Determination.

Any person with sufficient interest in the decision to adopt the Wakefield District Design Code Supplementary Planning Document may make an application to the High Court for permission to apply for judicial review of the decision to adopt the SPD. Any such application must be made promptly and, in any event, no later than 3 months after the date on which the SPD was adopted.

The adopted SPD, Consultation Statement and Adoption Statement can be viewed at the Customer Access Point, Wakefield One, Burton Street, Wakefield, WF1 2EB during normal opening hours. These documents (as well as the SEA Screening Determination) can be viewed on the Council’s website at https://www.wakefield.gov.uk/planningSPDs
