ENVIRONMENT AGENCY

ANNOUNCEMENT OF INTENTION NOT TO PREPARE AN ENVIRONMENTAL STATEMENT

Regulation 5 of the Environmental Impact Assessment

Land Drainage Improvement Works (Amended) Regulations 1999 SI 1999/1783

WENT OUTFALL REFURBISHMENT

The Environment Agency gives notice that it proposes to carry out improvement works to the flood defences on River Went near Skyehouse at the River Went confluence with the River Don (NGR SE6676818744). The proposed improvement works will involve the following: Replacement of existing timber tidal doors on the River Went Outfall structure with new stainless-steel doors. Minor ancillary works will also take place, including creation of a temporary compound. The Environment Agency considers that the improvement works are not likely to have significant effects on the environment and does not intend to prepare an environmental statement in respect of them.

The improvement works are confined to the outfall structure itself (plus ancillary works) with normal river and tidal flow being maintained throughout the duration of work (one set of doors are operational at any time). Potential issues of flood risk, impacts to the local environment and operational activities are addressed through the Environment Agency’s Flood Risk Application Permit (FRAP) prior to commencing any work on site, and preparation of an Environmental Action Plan to implement the required controls and environmental management measures.

A ‘Keeping You Informed’ newsletter, issued April 2026, gives an overview for the work required. For any further details for the work methodology, environmental assessment and management, please contact the Project Manager via the email address below.

Any person wishing to make representations in relation to the likely environmental effects of the proposed improvement works should do so, in writing, to the address specified below, within 30 days of the date of publication of this notice.
