What is planned?

NORTH TYNESIDE COUNCIL

CLIFFORD’S FORT AND SURROUNDING AREA, NORTH SHIELDS
EXPERIMENTAL TRAFFIC REGULATION ORDER 2026

North Tyneside Council gives notice that it has made an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (Clifford’s Fort and surrounding area, North Shields) 2026 under Sections 1, 2, 9 and Part IV of Schedule 9 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 and all other enabling powers. The effect of the Order will be to introduce:

A) Limited Waiting without Charges Parking Places - 2 hours, no return within 4 hours, 8am - 6pm on Monday to Sunday.

1) Clifford’s Fort Car Park, North Shields
i. East side, from a point 38 metres south of its junction with Clifford Street, to a point 92 metres south of that junction.

ii. South side, to the north of the Old Low Light building, directly outside for the full width of the building (13 metres).

2) Clifford Street, North Shields on its

i. North side, from a point 30 metres east of its southern junction with Union Road to a point 15 metres west of its junction with the unnamed road to the east of Clifford’s Fort.

ii. South side, from a point 10 metres east of its northern junction with Union Road to a point 44 metres east of that junction.

3) Unnamed road to the east of Clifford’s Fort, North Shields on its

i. East side, from a point 29 metres south of the entrance to Low Lights car park to a point 125 metres south of the entrance to Low Lights car park.

ii. North west side from a point 2 metres south-west of the RNLI Lifeboat Station entrance, to a point 27 metres south-west of that junction.

4) Unnamed road to the east of the junction of Union Road and Union Quay on its

i. North side, from a point 35 metres east of its junction with Union Road to a point 42 metres east of that junction.

ii. South side, from a point 28 metres east of its junction with Union Quay to a point 40 metres east of that junction.

B) No Waiting at any Time.

1) Clifford Street, North Shields on its South side, from a point 10 metres east of its southern junction with Union Road to a point 38 metres east of that junction.

2) Unnamed road to the east of Clifford’s Fort, North Shields on its West side, from a point 10 metres south of its junction with Clifford Street, to a point 82 metres south of that junction.

The Order will come into force on June 29 2026, for a period not exceeding 18 months when the Council will decide whether to make an order to continue indefinitely the provisions of the experimental order.

Objections to the provisions of this Experimental Traffic Regulation Order must be made in writing, specifying the grounds, to democraticsupport@ northtyneside.gov.uk within six months of the date the order comes into force.
