SHEEP’S GREEN (CL65); LAND KNOWN AS NUTTER’S OR FOSTER’S CLOSE (CL 66)

Cambridge City Council has applied to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for consent under section 38 of the Commons Act 2006 to carry out restricted works on Sheep’s Green and “Land known as Nutter’s or Foster’s Close”.

The Planning Inspectorate will decide the application on behalf of the Secretary of State.

The proposed works are: i) to reinstate summer flows to historic paleochannels of the River Cam on Sheep’s Green Local Nature Reserve (LNR) in Cambridge on 10600 square metres of common land; ii) installation of bridges to maintain access to “islands” within the common that will be affected by the new watercourses; iii) installation of twin-wall pipes and box culverts to facilitate water flows; iv) dredging and backfilling of channels to facilitate sinuosity, and re-grading of banks; v) tree removal.

The works will be located: on the western half of “Land known as Nutter’s or Foster’s Close” (CL66); within Sheep’s Green (CL65): north of Fen Causeway, on the eastern side of the current watercourse; south of Fen Causeway, to the west of the current main watercourse; dredging work either side of Fen Causeway to the east of Sheep’s Green.
