What is planned?

EXTENSION TO BOXLEY CONSERVATION AREA BOUNDARIES

Description of proposal:

The new extension of Boxley Conservation Area includes the north and east of the Street, including significant sites such as Boxley House (GII), Warren Farm (GII), Hatchetts (GII), the Pump House (GII), and Styles Cottages (GII). This extension also includes the Boxley waterworks buildings.

Reason:

The justification for including this group of buildings is due their historical connection to the village, along with their design and architectural quality, which collectively contribute positively to the rural character of the area. Boxley House, in particular, has a strong relationship with the village and retains most of the buildings associated with the Estate within the Conservation Area. Its inclusion would safeguard this historic relationship and preserve the approach from the west, which has remained intact since the Norman period.

EXTENSION TO EAST FARLEIGH LOWER ROAD CONSERVATION AREA BOUNDARIES

Description of proposal:

The new extension includes the medieval East Farleigh Bridge (Grade I and Scheduled Monument), the East Farleigh Waterworks (Grade II), and the approach to the village from the station.

Reason:

The bridge, recognised as one of the finest examples of medieval bridges preserved in southern England, along with the waterworks buildings, has strong ties to the village’s history. These sites are associated with significant historical events, such as the Battle of Maidstone, as well as the village’s growth during the 18th century. The extension also includes the valley side field situated between Saint Mary’s churchyard and the River Medway, which helps to protect the long views into and out of the Conservation Area.
