WANDSWORTH BOROUGH COUNCIL

TOOTING BEC COMMON

BOROUGH OF WANDSWORTH

LONDON

Notice is hereby given that the Council of the London Borough of Wandsworth has applied to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for consent under article 12 of the Greater London Parks and Open Spaces Order 1967 to carry out restricted works on Tooting Bec Common. The Planning Inspectorate will decide the application on behalf of the Secretary of State.

Following approval of local planning ref 2025/1580 “Refurbishment of playground and railings around tennis court ticket hut”. The refurbishment of the play area will renew this landmark playground for children aged 0-12 and better incorporate the natural landscape within this footprint to support child led nature play and learning. The design and choice of equipment directly responds to 2 full public consultations in 2023-2024.

The proposed temporary works consist of Heras fencing installed immediately adjoining (but located within) the retained permanent playground fencing to ensure site safety during “construction” works (dismantling and installation of equipment and surfaces). The retained permanent playground fencing 1m high will remain unaltered apart from a 9m linear stretch where the fencing will be realigned to exclude the tennis court ticket kiosk. This will be located at Tooting Common Lakeside Playground, London, SW12 9HJ. The What3Words location is https://w3w.co/prices.office.drips

There will also be a temporary compound within the Dr Johnson Avenue car park during “construction” works (dismantling and installation of equipment and surfaces) enclosing an area of 40m². This will be located at Dr Johnson Avenue Parking, London SW17 8JU Car. The What2Words location is https://assume.really.afford

Within the proposed scheme the area of enclosed playground will be reduced to 4576m² (enclosed playground is currently 4630m²) This will consist of 1356m² of grass (unchanged), 1995m² natural scrub vegetation (unchanged), 26m² of tarmac will be removed and replaced by wetpour safety surface, leaving 342m² tarmac and 886m² wetpour safety surface. A further 54m² will be totally excluded from the enclosed area (hard standing and tennis court ticket kiosk).
