What is planned?

THE NEW FOREST COMMON

National Grid has applied to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for consent under section 38 of the Commons Act 2006 and section 23(2) of the National Trust Act 1971 to carry out restricted works on The New Forest Common. The Planning Inspectorate will decide the application on behalf of the Secretary of State.

The proposed works pertain to National Grid refurbishing the 4YB overhead line that goes from Nursling to Mannington and crosses the New Forest common land near Hale and Plaitford. The main works will take place May – September 2026.

This refurbishment will ensure that National Grid can continue to provide a safe and reliable supply of electricity to the area. None of the work will affect the local electricity supply. The works will take place around the base of each tower. There will be temporary fencing at the towers ranging from 9m2 on the most basic towers to 4000m2 on the main site only. Visitors to the New Forest will still be able to use the wider area.

The Common Land Application submitted will contain information regarding the works, materials and equipment that will be in use, and the relevant ecological mitigations that have been addressed.

The works and fencing will be located at the National Grid towers that are in two locations on the New Forest:

• Towers 061-066 are between Hale Purlieu road and the B3080

• Towers 083 – 085 are located on Plaitford Common

A copy of the application form and accompanying documents can be inspected at the below location until Friday 24th October 2025.

• Landford Post Office: Lyndhurst Rd, Landford, Salisbury SP5 2AJ

A copy of the application form and accompanying documents may be obtained by writing to Fisher German, Banbury Office Village, 2a, Noral Way, Banbury OX16 2SB. Alternatively, copies can be requested by emailing kate.manners@fishergerman.co.uk.
