Public Consultation: proposed Site Developments at Loch Carnan and Sound of Harris

Renowned worldwide for producing premium farm-raised salmon, Loch Duart is committed to sustainable growth. We are proposing to consolidate and modernise our existing farming operations in the Loch Carnan and Sound of Harris areas, ensuring continued excellence in low-impact salmon farming while safeguarding and creating jobs.

Proposed Developments

Sound of Harris (SOH1)
Relocation and redevelopment of an existing site in the Sound of Harris (Groay-Lingay) into deeper waters with stronger currents, ensuring optimal conditions for fish welfare and quality whilst minimising potential effects on the local environment.

Tarenish (TARE1)
Consolidation of four existing consents within Loch Carnan (Isle of South Uist) into one new site (Tarenish). This will reduce the overall number of consented sites in the area from five to two, and the total consented tonnage by over 480 tonnes. The proposal ensures the optimal conditions for fish welfare and quality whilst minimising potential effects on the local
environment.

We are seeking public feedback on these plans. As part of the development process, SEPA as the regulator has prepared ‘Screening Modelling and Risk Identification Reports’ for the two proposed sites; these form the basis of this consultation. Public consultation at this early stage helps identify and address potential issues before full applications are submitted, allowing for adjustments that benefit both the environment and local communities.
