TOWN AND COUNTRY PLANNING

PLANNING (LISTED BUILDINGS AND CONSERVATION AREAS) ACT 1990

NOTIFICATION OF CONSERVATION AREA BOUNDARY AMENDMENTS

PRIDDYS HARD CONSERVATION AREA

Notice is hereby given under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 Section 69, that on 14th February 2024, following public consultation Gosport Borough Council adopted the amended boundary of the previously designated Conservation Area known as 'Priddy's Hard Conservation Area' as set out below.

The amended boundary of the conservation area encompasses the former Priddy's Hard Ordnance Depot. The new northeastern boundary comprises the high-water mark of Portsmouth Harbour, including the Shell Pier apart from the easternmost section because this lies within the jurisdiction of Portsmouth City Council. The new southern boundary of the conservation area is defined by the shoreline of Forton Lake running west beyond the traverses of the former shelling filling rooms and now includes the Priddy's Hard Nature Reserve.

The new north-western boundary is generally defined by the boundary between the historic field of fire and the neighbourhood of Elson, including the two cordite stores. The former northern section of the conservation area encompassing the northern end of Heritage Way, Charlotte Drive, Hayling Close, Vanguard Road and Orion Avenue has been removed.

The Conservation Area is an area of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance. The area is subject to planning regulations and controls set out under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990.

In addition to drawing attention to the heritage value of the area, designation brings some additional planning controls and other implications, such as:

• Requirement to preserve or enhance character and appearance in national legislation and policy;

• Control of demolition of buildings;

• Control of works to or removal of certain trees;

• Control over development that may be permitted elsewhere, e.g. some house extensions.

The Priddy's Hard Conservation Area boundary map can be viewed online at the Council's website: https://www.gosport.gov.uk/article/1643/Designation-of-Conservation-Areas

and in person at Gosport Borough Council, Town Hall, High Street, Gosport, PO12 1EB . If further information is required, please contact Gosport Borough Council's Conservation team on (023) 9258 4242 or planning@gosport.gov.uk.
