Cumberland Council, Millom Castle and Holy Trinity Church Conservation Area
What is planned?
Cumberland Council hereby gives notice under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 that Millom Castle and Holy Trinity Church Conservation Area came into existence on the 31st October 2023.
The conservation area is compact, surrounding Millom Castle, Holy Trinity Church to the south, the former School Room and the former Headmaster's House, from the A5093 on the north side to the southern boundary of the churchyard, and including the area immediately to the east of the Castle. In addition to drawing attention to the heritage value of the area, designation brings some additional planning controls and other implications, such as:
Requirement to preserve or enhance character and appearance in national legislation and policy;
Control of demolition of buildings;
Control of works to or removal of certain trees;
Control over development that may be permitted elsewhere, e.g. some house extensions.
The appraisal, outlining the area's special significance, and including the boundary map and contact details for enquiries, can be found on the website of Cumberland Council [Conservation and Design Documents and Guidance] or requested in printed form at the Council's offices in the Market Hall on Market Place, Whitehaven, CA28 7JG.
