Warwick District Council - National Fraud Initiative
What is happening?
WARWICK DISTRICT COUNCIL
NATIONAL FRAUD INITIATIVE 2026/27
Warwick District Council has a legal and moral obligation to protect
the public funds that it administers from fraud and abuse. To help us
accomplish this, we are required by law to participate in an exercise
run by the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) known as the
National Fraud Initiative (NFI). Since its inception, the NFI has saved the
taxpayer more than £2.9 billion through identification of frauds, errors
and overpayment.
These were detected using a technique known as “data matching” in which
computerised records are cross referenced by computers against information
held by other public bodies.
The records that we at Warwick District Council have to provide for this
purpose include details of persons who fall into any of the following
categories:
• persons liable for council tax for properties within Warwick District;
• persons in receipt of rebate under the Warwick District Council Tax
Reduction Scheme
• persons in receipt of housing benefit from us;
• employees and Elected Members of the Council;
• persons on our housing waiting list;
• tenants of our Council housing residential properties;
• persons who purchased their house from us under Right to Buy within
the last 3 years;
• suppliers of goods and services to us;
• persons recorded on our electoral register;
• persons who are licensed within this District to operate taxis.
All information involved in this process is treated with the utmost care. All
data produced for NFI is held securely within the Council’s systems and only
transmitted to and from the DWP by encrypted connection.
Use of the data in this way does not require the consent of the individuals
concerned under the Data Protection Act 2018 and General Data Protection
Regulations. The DWP has powers under law to obtain and process the
data as they direct, subject to a Code of Practice. This Code and further
information on the NFI can be found through our website:
/nfi
and on the NFI website:
