What is happening?

Changes to Council Tax charges for unoccupied and unfurnished properties from 1 April 2026 and second home properties from 1 April 2027


Notice is hereby given that on the 11 December 2025, North Northamptonshire Council, made the following resolution.
Council Tax Premiums
From 1 April 2026 - properties that have been unoccupied and substantially unfurnished for at least one year but less than 5 years, excluding any occupation of less than six weeks, will be charged a 100% premium (previously this premium charge applied from 2 years).
All other empty property premiums remain unchanged, namely, a premium of 200% where a property has remained empty for a period of at least 5 years but less than 10 years, and a premium of 300% where a property has remained empty for a period of 10 years or more.
From 1 April 2027 – properties that are second homes (no one's sole or main residence but are furnished) will be charged a 100% premium from day one (until 1 April 2027 there is no premium charge for second homes).
