NOTICE OF PROPOSED COAST PROTECTION WORKS
Coast Protection Act 1949 Beach Recycling Works at Hurst Spit, Hampshire
Notice is hereby given that NEW FOREST DISTRICT COUNCIL - LYNDHURST, Appletree Court, Beaulieu Road, Lyndhurst, SO43 7PA, acting under the Coast Protection Act 1949, proposes to undertake beach recycling works at Hurst Spit, Hampshire, just east of Milford-on-Sea.
The proposed works will be approximately three weeks in duration and undertaken between 1st October and 30th November 2025. Up to 15,000 cubic metres of shingle will be moved from naturally accreting areas on the seaward face of Hurst Spit to eroded sections on the lee side, restoring the crest width to 10–12 metres and maintain the spit’s flood defence and coastal erosion function.
The project has received conditional assent from Natural England under Section 28H of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. All operations will avoid vegetated shingle and will follow ecological guidance to minimise environmental impact, particularly to overwintering birds.
The proposed works are consistent with the Hurst Spit Beach Management Plan and the Shoreline Management Plan policy of “Hold the Line”, interpreted locally as “Hold the Form”. These works also support the Hurst to Lymington Strategy and the Christchurch Bay Strategy, which are long-term flood and erosion risk management plans.
Via email request, plans may be inspected at: New Forest District Council, Appletree Court, Beaulieu Road, Lyndhurst, SO43 7PA.
All representations should be made within 28 days to:
