Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976
FIXING OF FARES FOR HACKNEY CARRIAGES
NOTICE is hereby given that Horsham District Council in the exercise of its powers under Section 65
of the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976 has made the following revised table of
fares in connection with the rates of fares and other charges associated with the hire of a hackney
carriage within the district. The figures given are a maximum.
FOR VEHICLES CARRYING 1-4 PASSENGERS
TARIFF ONE – Daytime Rate
Effective for hiring begun between 07.00am and 11.00pm
For the first 143yds or 25 secs or combination of distance & time (or part) £4.40
For each additional 143yds or 25 secs or combination of distance & time (or part) £0.15
TARIFF TWO – Night and Holiday Rate
Effective for hiring between 11pm and 7am Sundays and
National Public Holidays (except where Double Daytime Rate applies)
For the first 191yds or 34 secs or combination of distance & time (or part) £6.60
For each additional 191yds or 34 secs or combination of distance & time (or part) £0.30
TARIFF THREE – Double Daytime Rate
Effective from 11pm on Christmas Eve and 5am on 27 December
and 11pm on 31 December and 7am on 1 January
For the first 143yds or 25 secs or combination of distance & time (or part) £8.80
For each additional 143yds or 25 secs or combination of distance & time (or part) £0.30
EFFECTIVE FOR CARRYING 5-8 PASSENGERS
TARIFF 4 – Daytime Rate
Effective for hiring begun between 07.00am and 11.00pm
For the first 143yds or 25 secs or combination of distance & time (or part) £6.60
For each additional 143yds or 25 secs or combination of distance & time (or part) £0.30
TARIFF 5 – Night and Holiday Rate
Effective for hiring between 11pm and 7am Sundays and
National Public Holidays (except where Double Daytime Rate applies)
For the first 191yds or 34 secs or combination of distance & time (or part) £9.90
For each additional 191yds or 34 secs or combination of distance & time (or part) £0.60
TARIFF 6 – Double Daytime Rate
Effective from 11pm on Christmas Eve and 5am on 27 December
and 11pm on 31 December and 7am on 1 January
For the first 143yds or 25 secs or combination of distance & time (or part) £13.20
For each additional 143yds or 25 secs or combination of distance & time (or part) £0.60
EXTRA CHARGES
Where licensed to carry 1-4 passengers, each passenger in excess of one £0.50
Where licensed to carry 5-8 passengers, each passenger in excess of five £0.50
All luggage carried inside or outside of the passenger compartment is free of charge.
Any assistance dog is carried free of charge.
Payment by credit/debit card is free of charge.
SOILAGE CHARGE
If this vehicle is damaged or soiled by a passenger, the driver or proprietor is entitled to charge a
£100 soilage fee to recover all costs of cleaning or repairing such damage or soiling from the
passenger/person responsible.
The consultation period is from 27 March 2025 to 10 April 2025. Any objections to the revised table of
fares must be made in writing before the end of the consultation period and addressed to:

The revised table of fares will be effective from 11 April 2025, unless any objections are made and not
withdrawn during the consultation period, in which case the revised table of fares (with or without
modifications) will come into effect on a later date following consideration of those objections.
