Canterbury, Public Notice
What is proposed?
Public Notice
29 October 2026
Canterbury City Council is consulting on a draft Statement of Licensing Policy.
The council is the Licensing Authority under the Licensing Act 2003 and is responsible for granting premises licences, club premises certificates, personal licences and temporary event notices for the sale and supply of alcohol, regulated entertainment and late-night refreshment.
The Licensing Act 2003 requires the council to publish a Statement of Licensing Policy setting out how it will carry out its licensing functions and promote the four licensing objectives of preventing crime and disorder, ensuring public safety, preventing public nuisance and protecting children from harm.
The current policy is being reviewed and updated to ensure it remains relevant and reflects current legislation, guidance and local circumstances.
The draft policy sets out how the council will approach licensing decisions and aims to support a safe and prosperous district, encourage a thriving cultural and night-time economy, promote family-friendly licensed premises, protect residents from disturbance and help reduce alcohol-related harm.
We invite comments from responsible authorities, licence holders, businesses, community groups, residents and any other interested parties.
The consultation closes at 9am on Tuesday 17 November 2026.
All comments must be received by this deadline.
The draft policy and consultation questionnaire can be viewed and completed online through the council’s Have Your Say consultation portal at haveyoursay.canterbury.gov.uk
The consultation can be found in the Latest consultations section of the website.
Paper copies of the draft policy and consultation questionnaire are available on request.
If you are unable to complete the online questionnaire, comments may also be submitted to Consultations Team, Canterbury City Council, 14 Rose Lane, Canterbury, CT1 2UR or by email to consultations@canterbury.gov.uk
Following the consultation, all responses will be considered before a final version of the policy is presented to councillors for consideration and adoption.
