Cockermouth, Temporary Road Closures and Traffic Restrictions

What is happening?

CUMBERLAND COUNCIL (VARIOUS ROADS, COCKERMOUTH) (CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCH ON EVENT) (TEMPORARY TRAFFIC REGULATION) ORDER 2025

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that to facilitate the holding of the Cockermouth Christmas Light Switch On (“the Event”) Cumberland Council has made an Order under Section 16A of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 (the 1984 Act), with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport under Section 16(B)(6) of the 1984 Act, the effect of which is to impose the following restrictions on the day and during the hours specified below: -

1. To prohibit any vehicle from proceeding along the following lengths of road: -

(a) Main Street, Cockermouth – between its junctions with Sullart Street and Station Street.

Suitable alternative routes for vehicles will be available as follows: -

Westbound Vehicles – via Station Street, Station Road, Gallowbarrow and Sullart Street;

Eastbound Vehicles – via Sullart Street, South Street and Station Street.

(b) Bridge Street, Cockermouth – for its entire length;

(c) Bridge Close, Cockermouth – for its entire length.

There is no suitable alternative route for vehicles during the restrictions specified at 3(b) and 3(c) above. Vehicular access for residents will be via the western end of Main Street under the direction of a Banksman by the authorised traffic management company.

(d) The right-hand lane of the B5292 Station Street, Cockermouth, from its junction with the U2375 South Street, extending in a southerly direction for approx. 28 metres.

(e) The south-eastbound lane of the unadopted road between U2286 Station Road and Fairfield car park, from its junction with the U2286 Station Road, extending in a northerly direction for approx. 40 metres.

Duration – From 1000 hours to 1930 hours on Sunday 23 November 2025

A way for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be maintained at all times during the restrictions detailed at 1(a) to 1(d) inclusive above. A way for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be maintained by use of the existing pedestrian crossing for the restriction detailed in 1(e) above.

2. To prohibit any vehicle from waiting at any time or from loading/unloading at any time, on any day (including blue badge holders), along the following lengths of road;

(a) On both sides and the entire lengths of South Street and Station Street, Cockermouth;

(b) On both sides of the B5292 Main Street, Cockermouth;

(c) On both sides of the C2064 Main Street, Cockermouth from the junction of Station Street (north and south side) (EXCEPT FOR BUSES AND TAXIS).

(d) On the north-east side of Lorton Street, Cockermouth (single 24m length)

Duration – From 0800 hours to 1930 hours on Sunday 23 November 2025

3. To prohibit any person to cause or permit any vehicle to proceed, other than in a south-easterly direction, along South Street, Cockermouth, between its junctions with Sullart Street and the B5292 Station Street.

Duration – From 1000 hours to 1930 hours on Sunday 23 November 2025

To facilitate the alternative routes and allow two-way traffic flow during the road restrictions detailed in 1 above, the one-way traffic restriction on that section of the B5292 Station Street, from its junction with Main Street to its junction with South Street, will be temporarily suspended for the duration of the Event.

Nothing in the Order to which this notice relates shall:

(a) Apply to emergency service vehicles, or vehicles being used by statutory undertakers in the performance of their duties; and

(b) Apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform; and

(c) Have the effect of preventing at any time access for pedestrians to any premises situated on or adjacent to the roads, or to any other premises accessible for pedestrians from, and only from the roads; and

(d) Apply to vehicles being used in connection with the Event.

The restrictions detailed in 2 above shall not apply to any vehicle making deliveries to business premises providing that the waiting time for those deliveries is limited to a maximum of 30 minutes duration and whilst the ‘No Waiting At Any Time’ Restrictions are in place on South Street, Cockermouth there will be alternative bus stops available on Sullart Street and Lorton Road. The ‘No Waiting At Any Time’ Restrictions on Main Street, Cockermouth will not apply to service buses and taxis which will be able to stop in designated areas.

The Order will come into operation on 23 November 2025 and may continue in force for a maximum duration of 3 days. However, it is anticipated that the restrictions will only be required as detailed above and only as and when the appropriate traffic signs are displayed.
